Retaining Walls
Retaining walls offer solutions to sloping landscapes making it possible to create outdoor living spaces and can also be used to enclose areas for decorative gardens.
They can be constructed with many different materials ,including Segmental Retaining Wall block, Reinforced Cinderblock faced with natural stone veneer or brick, and building stone.

Segmental retaining walls (SRWs)
Segmental retaining walls (SRWs) are gravity retaining walls consisting of concrete masonry blocks which are placed without the use of mortar (dry stacked). They primarily rely on their mass (weight) for stability in combination with a mechanical interlock to prevent sliding and overturning . The blocks may also be used in combination with horizontal layers of soil reinforcement fabric which is attached in between the block courses and extend into the back-fill to increase the effective width and weight of the gravity mass. Benefits of segmental retaining walls include:
Economics and performance– SRWs are an attractive and cost-effective alternative to conventional rigid cast-in-place concrete retaining walls. Savings are gained because the need to excavate deep footers below the frost grade is not necessary. This is because the blocks adjust and move relative to one another without visible signs of distress when subject to freeze thaw movement. In most cases on-site soil can be used to eliminate the cost associated with importing fill dirt for back fill. Furthermore SRWs eliminate the cost for heavy construction equipment or extensive form work .
Aesthetics – Since segmental retaining SRW blocks are available in a variety of sizes, shapes, textures and colors, they provide designers and owners with a structurally sound wall system that is attractive .
Ease of Installation – SRW blocks can be placed by a single construction worker. The method of laying units without mortar allows erection of the wall to proceed rapidly.
Design Flexibility – The size and weight of the SRW blocks makes it possible to construct walls in the most difficult locations.Due to the shape of the blocks, curves and other unique layouts can be easily accommodated.

Natural stone or brick retaining walls.
A reinforced cinder block retaining wall can be faced with natural stone or brick if that is your preference.
A reinforced cinder block retaining wall consists of a concrete footer with vertical rebar stubs that extend through the hollow cinder block cores which are filled with grout mix creating a solid steel reinforced wall.
The concrete footer is typically 3 feet deep below grade and 2 feet wide to provide an anchor for the retaining wall. Your footer may need to be deeper depending on the height of the wall .
This is a short reinforced cinder block retaining wall faced with synthetic stone veneer (also known as manufactured stone).
