This stone fireplace was incorporated into the courtyard wall . This was initially designed in 15 minutes on a sketch pad as the customer conveyed to me what they wanted. It was constructed using a custom modified blend of “Oysterdale Quartzite” building stone available from Frederick Block in Winchester VA (a distributor of http://www.rollrock.com/ .) The hearth and walls were topped with 2″ thick Tennessee Sandstone treads for a formal theme .
A stone’s FACE refers to the side of the stone that shows when placed in a wall. There are two types of face finishes .
Natural face
Natural face is the surface of a rock in its natural form weathered by the environment and unaltered. It can also be refered to as “weathered face” which is typically available in the fieldstone variety.
Split Face or Chopped stone (commonly available as ledgestone)
Split Face or Chopped stone (commonly available as ledgestone) is just that, implying the surface of a stone that has been chopped ,unweathered by the environment, and lighter in color as a result. Depending on the type of stone and the way it was chopped, color veining can be revealed for appealing aesthetics.
There are 3 main STYLES of natural stone categorized by their SHAPES that are widely available in thick building stone and thin cut veneer.
- Ashlar refers to building stone that has been squared off into large random sized blocks. They can also be semi-square depending on the look you desire.
- Ledgestone also known as “chopped or split face” is composed of smaller strips of stone that are 1-5 inches thick and 4 -14 inches long . It is laid to show the chopped face .
- Fieldstone has a more natural shape producing a very random pattern.
This chimney was faced with building stone that is a blend of “natural weathered” and “split faced” Sandstone. This produces more color and size variation. They have been chopped, cut ,and chiseled to produce a semi square ashlar pattern with tight consistent spacing. Tan grout was used to complement the color of the stone and raked back to create a 1/2″ recess to reveal the edges .
A decorative stone corbel with a 2″ over hang finishes off this chimney for a classic touch.
This is the fireplace and chimney constructed on the interior wall .
All natural stone veneer
All natural stone veneer is “real” stone that has been split and sawn to be approximately one (1) inch thick. It is used as a wall covering for exterior and interior surfaces.Thin stone veneer can be installed without a footer ledge to support it . This makes an especially good option for covering existing walls where a thin profile is desired. The most common use is to dress up concrete foundations and stairwells to walk-in basements. It is great for accent walls in basements , behind a bar, fireplaces , hearths, retaining walls and more. Its available in Ashlar, Ledgestone and Fieldstone styles as well as Natural and Chopped face finishes.
See these links for available “thin cut stone” to choose from.
