Most buildings need foundations to transfer the weight of the structure and of the roof and floor loads into the ground. Small sheds and backyard structures like gazebos and pergolas may not need elaborate foundations because they are so light. But, for any building over about 150 square feet, a strong foundation is essential.
There are two types of foundations –Stem-wall and Monolithic . Some folks will call the monolithic a floating foundation, while others will call a stem-wall a footer foundation. Regardless, here’s the quick definition of both.

Stem-wall slabs

Stem-wall slabs are foundation systems constructed in three components; a footer to transfer load to the underlying soil, a masonry foundation and a poured slab.

This garage was built with a stem-wall foundation . The walls are constructed with 4″ brick facing over 8″ cinderblock up to the eve line. This creates 12″ thick masonry walls that are much stronger than conventional walls made from sheeted wood framing.

Monolithic slabs

Monolithic slabs are foundation systems constructed as one single concrete pour that consists of a concrete slab with thickened portions of the slab under load bearing walls and all perimeter edges.
They cannot be used on sloping land because they will require too much concrete and become too expensive. However if you have minimal slope monolithic slabs can save time ,labor and money. They are especially suitable for garages ,sheds, and small additions.
